And I won't try to fight in the weekend wars

When you’re on holiday, every day is the weekend. And when you’re on a Greek island, it’s even better, if you can believe me. Unfortunately, Greek islands also tend to make me lazy as far as documenting my outfits, so this is a only small, very random collection of the outfits that I wore to do nothing but take walks and eat and drink :)

Walking around Barcelona in gold leaf earrings, beige gap top, old navy shorts and my michael kors (now sadly broken) sandals.

image

Shopping for groceries -how glam!- in an old levi’s top (which is going to be discarded due to a huuuge hole that you can’t see because it’s tucked into my old navy shorts) and my also now-broken flip flops (in fact, they broke just as I was carrying the groceries home… how typical).

Exploring my Barcelona neighborhood in a cutoff bershka tank top, zara shorts and my white converse.

Going out for a drink with mom after arriving in Athens -I wore her (now mine!) white top and grey shorts with my mallorquinas, and I tucked my hair into my collar so it looked like I had shorter hair.

OK, this is more of an excuse to show you that even the ground is beautiful in Greece, but anyways. This is what I wore to go out on a windier evening: h&m shorts -a gift from my stylish friend-, zara men’s sweater and mallorquinas. You can see the light blue nail polish on my second toe peeking through ;)

Lunch in Athens -I didn’t want to carry a handbag because, well, it was just too hot (if that makes any sense)… so I shoved all my things into the first thing I grabbed, namely this freebie neon yellow bag that Vogue once gave away for putting your wet bikini in. Lol. Otheriwise, I wore the previously-seen grey high waisted shorts and this top with my ancient greek sandals.

Anyways, in case you didn’t get this title’s reference: it’s from an MGMT song, and the moral of this story is that there is  no point fighting in the weekend is there?

The greek shoes

Because supporting the Greek economy is crucial, but mostly because I’m desperate to bring a chunk of Greece back to Amsterdam with me, both pairs of shoes I bought in Greece can’t be found outside the country.

The first one is a beautiful pair of slip-on beige suede sandals from Kalogirou. Designed and made in Greece, they didn’t come cheap, but I’ll definitely keep them for a long time.

The second pair was bought in a little village in Paros. They’re leather sandals that tie around the ankle, the kind of sandals I would imagine ancient Greeks wore. You can wear them, wet them, and wear them some more: instead of getting ruined, they’ll only get softer and tanner with time (and if they eventually break down, they’re really cheap!). They’re not very special in the sense that almost everyone in Greece has a pair of these traditional Greek leather sandals (they come in different designs), but to me they’re very special precisely for that reason: wearing them makes me feel like I have a bit of Greece with me, even when I’m 2160 km away from home.

Wardrobe purge

During a sleepless night yesterday (missing my bed), I was thinking about how I have quite a few clothes that I rarely wear because they only work under certain conditions: this top is too sheer for most occasions, that top has a huge hole in it so it has to be worn tucked into something high waisted, that skirt is too short to sit down in… What to do then? I do think that editing my wardrobe down to get rid of clothes that just sit there unworn/clothes that fit wrong and don’t do me any favours would simplify getting dressed and looking good with less effort… But I’m not sure that I want to adopt a ‘uniform’ of sorts. Even though my style doesn’t  fluctuate dramatically -I’m quite true to my tastes and don’t change my wardrobe according to the fashion dictats-, I like the idea adapting my clothes to my mood and being able to experiment.

In other words, I’m not ready to settle for a style… And yes, I know that building a wardrobe of classics is the thing to do if you want to be chic, and not that I disagree, but I also want my way of dressing to be unique -in a discreet, but tangible way. I don’t want to look like a million other women in my trench coat and black ballet flats or whatever, because there is no reason to! So that brings me to my other point. Do I keep the corset top passed on from my mom’s 80’s wardrobe that I’ve worn, oh let’s see, once in two years? It’s fun to wear, but in daily life it’s cluttering my wardrobe. Yet isn’t it a pity to get rid of something I love, even if it’s a little dysfunctional?

I think the commitment that I’m going to make for now is edit down my collection of not-so-practical clothes to those that are at least wearable (and after a certain degree of deconstruction, even I have to admit defeat) but keep them, and from now on focus on buying only quality building blocks. Now, on the unlikely possibility that you’re still reading after all this rambling, any thoughts?

Week 4+

This happened some time ago but I never got around to posting it. For continuity’s sake alone, here goes what I wore on the last one and a half week of my internship:

image

Monday: zara maxi dress and cutoff old t-shirt, mallorquinas and braided hair. Bag is from zara.

Tuesday: my apologies, but Tuesday’s outfit was -in hindsight- too atrocious to even admit to wearing, let alone show here.

image

image

Wednesday: wore my thrifted cos striped tee, my h&m denim shorts, mallorquinas and a few rings with red lipstick.

image

Thursday: Ha, another dress-top layering ninja move. Zara dress, mom’s old light blue top, mallorquinas as per usual, and probably hoop earrings.

image

Friday: In a non-headless picture for a change, I’m wearing my thrifted zara tee, american vintage pants (very lightweight so bearable) andddd, you guessed it, mallorquinas. And a couple of rings as well.

image

Aaand the next Monday I wore my long american vintage skirt with a cutoff bershka tank top and my mallorquinas.

image

Tuesday: same skirt and shoes, oversize men’s tee tied at the waist and dark lip stain. When I got off work I rolled up the sleeves of the tee to make it into a sort of sleeveless top, which is cool in both senses of the word :)

And that’s it from my office days. No more pretending to dress ‘appropriately’ -ha, ha- for the rest of the summer, right?

Sales in Spain

image

nail polish, looks black but it’s really dark burgundy and was only 2 euros

zara bag. It’s chic and minimal the way I like it. It’s not real leather, unfortunately, but this means 1. it was reasonably priced, and 2. I can use it everyday for carting my books around etc. and not have to worry about ruining it!

In which I disappear into my holiday

It wasn’t intentional, but it happened. The holidays are treating me way too nicely for me to post regularly*, so for now I’m going to take it easy until I -hopefully- get back on track this September. I only have a bit of time left to soak up all the sun I can, so for the moment, arrivederci!

*even though I still get dressed -most days anyways! ;)
