Can you tell what my favourite colour is?

..it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out from these pics. [Tumblr needs me to ask a question in the title so that people can comment on my ramblings, so I’ll keep my 2.5 readers on their toes with the questions from now on]

Now, on to more serious matters, spring has finally arrived in Amsterdam and it was worth the wait! This is what I’m wearing:

image

blazer: thrifted, top: olsen (not the sisters!) -my mom’s, belt: my dad’s, jeans: massimo dutti, shoes: oysho, bag (background): just campagne -also my mom’s from ages ago

I’m so excited to be able to wear things like this, and as much as I love my coat, I don’t miss it one bit!

image

Now, it is my belief that every girl can find the perfect black blazer -mine is boyfriend-fit and has pockets-, simply because there are so many out there! You don’t even need to go to normal shops and spend a lot of money, try your luck at the local thrift shop or, if you live in Amsterdam, Ijhallen (I found this one there for two euros!). After you have your blazer, you can always make it perfect by tweaking little things. I took out the shoulderpads (a 10 minute job) and I’m thinking of replacing the black plastic buttons for nicer ones.  And you can always sling a blazer nonchalantly on your shoulders! (Geneva gives you the how-to here)

image

Another point: I’ve been cuffing my jeans like crazy. I think it’s the perfect spring update -I don’t want to actually wear shorts just yet!- and it shows off your pretty ankles.

image

Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the fantastic, fabulous shoes

Finally, it was national wear-all-the-jewelery-you-own day in my world, so I wore my silver hoops and ALL of my rings. There! Enjoy the hipster-style pictures.

Shy?

I’ve been gone for a while, true… But it’s only because I’ve been plotting my comeback! It’s just something us celebrities do ;)

Anyways, the story is that I have an amazing friend who saw the blog and kindly offered to lend me her camera for the pictures… Big, big thank you <3.

But the reason I’ve been AWOL is because I was too busy to shoot the outfits, therefore more outfits amassed, and then I needed even more time… plus taking pictures of yourself is not the easiest thing in the world, let me tell you. And I am no photographer, so while I would love my blog to look like something out of a Vogue editorial (see styleheroine’s blog), I’m happy with pictures where you can’t see the pixels for now ;)

So, without further ado, let us look at the first picture I took… Another selfie? Really?

image

…I was shy, OK? Suddenly you can see every little tiny detail in my face. It was all I could do to hide behind the camera… but OK, I promise not to abuse :) Plus, that way you can appreciate the awesome artwork on my wall!

There’s my face… I’m still a bit camera-shy but I’m getting there! Outfit post to follow :)

Inspiration?

image

dress: zara, sweater: american vintage, denim jacket: tommy hilfiger, shoes: aniel

When lacking inspiration in the morning, I reach for tried-and-tested combinations like this one. This maxi dress is sexy worn as is in the summer, but what Iike about it is that you can actually layer and wear it as a skirt. Multiple layers are really practical for controlling how warm/cold you get. I just added a thin sweater and my denim biker and voila! I still wore my coat over everything but soon I will hopefully be able to replace it with a pair of sunnies :)

Makeup-wise, I used brown pencil to define my brows and line my eyes, rimmed them with light-coloured pencil to brighten them, applied mascara and used dark berry lip stain on my lips. To compensate for all of this, I skipped foundation (which I use as concealer) and only used BB cream.

PS: I have a new bed and changed the wooden boxes at the bed’s end as well. I <3 them and my plant.

Inaugural outfit

image

dress worn as top: american vintage, jeans: massimo dutti, pumps: zara, belt: dad’s

…If you’re wondering what the title’s all about, well the answer is my new pumps, of course!

I wore this to another casual student night event, mainly because I wouldn’t have to walk or stand a lot. I got complimeted on my shoes, which didn’t kill me but which are a bit on the large side. I also discovered that walking on cobblestone-type streets with stilettos is not the best idea, and will from now on stick to the good ol’ Dutch way of biking everywhere.

On to the outfit itself, the top is actually a dress. I thought about wearing it over the jeans without tucking it in, but these (supposedly skinny) jeans might not be skinny enough, in my opinion. At the moment they are between skinny and skinny boyfriend jeans I’d say… which is not necessarily bad but goes to illustrate, for another time, the difficulty of finding the perfect jeans. Maybe they’re only an urban myth?

I get by with a little help from my friends

image

sweater, top and pants: american vintage, shoes: aniel, belt: dad’s

There is nothing like a sincere compliment from a friend to lift your spirits. And so without further ado, I give you… sockless shoes! Yay for spring!

image

I just realized that I pulled a total american vintage look without even being aware of it. Even the shoes were bought there! (although they’re a different brand…) I don’t usually approve of “total looks” but this one was inadvertent so I think I’m in the clear. Oh and the rings I wore:

How to become a pirate...

image

…in less than 5 minutes.

Do your makeup as usual, wear a plaid shirt tied at the waist (preferably with something high-waisted) and canvas flats, try -and fail- to make your eye mask look like an eye patch and wear it as a bandana instead, wear hoop earrings and all the rings you can grab, and you’re ready to go. Use a bottle of rum as your prop.

PS: I haven’t gone completely crazy yet, this was for a pirate-themed party.

Apologies for the pictures, but pirates are always late for things and take pictures hurriedly at the last moment.

Catch up!

Friday was party time! But only after midnight for me, because I had to make a deadline first. Then I got dressed and did my makeup:

image

I’ve been trying to experiment with my makeup a bit because it can get boring: I tend to stick to a few tried-and-tested looks. For example, I wanted to do a brown smoky eye, so I found some brown eyeshadow, but it did not work… I just can’t use eyeshadow to save my life. So instead I lined my eyes as usual and tried this warm red lipcolour which was sort of sheer. I think it looks good; if it was matte red lipstick it would’ve been too much with the lined eyes, and for me this was borderline even, but I think for a party it’s OK…

image

In any case, I got to the party and I was like “I need to catch on the drinking”. Bad, bad idea.

This is what saved me the next day:

It looks like an innocent pink M&M, but it’s actually ibuprofen 400mg. Need I say anything more?

Wristband + watch

Remember this outfit? I wore the leftover fabric from my DIY as an wristband, but I forgot to photograph it, so here it is.

image

I basically just took the fabric which was a 5cm wide circle and twisted it many times around my wrist, and then I wore my watch over it, tucking the back part into the fabric.

In my opinion, this is a great way to a. make sure nothing goes to waste, and b. create an accesory that’s interesting without being obnoxious -I hate wearing things like bangles that always get in the way and make a lot of noise, so this discreet, functional way to decorate the wrist is perfect for me!

Happy outfit

image

sweater: weekday, skirt: american vintage, shoes: aniel

Yes, my purple sweater goes with everything. Ha. Its only problem is that it’s too long so it needs to be shortened by tucking the edges into my skirt/pants, otherwise I risk ending up looking shapeless. I couldn’t quite put my finger on why it looked better shortened, until I came across The Sartorialist’s explanation.

image

I wore flats because they’re more casual, and the skirt is really short so heels would’ve been too much. I was really happy with this outfit, especially since I’m slowly finding new things to wear with this skirt!

New lows

image

grey sweater: zara men’s, purple sweater: weekday, denim shorts: h&m, everything else: random.

I don’t know about most people, but I don’t remember ever layering two sweaters before… in public at least. When I told my friends (“I have reached new lows!”), they thought it was completely normal though -gasp! But after 5 years months of winter, I’ve tried everything else so might as well, right?

Technically the grey sweater is thin and could pass off as a top, but in any case, light sweater + thick wool sweater = warm and cozy, and when you’re going to be biking that’s all that matters my friends. So I feel quite smug that the colours look nice together and everything, too.

image

Now the legs are a different story. I’m already pissed that I still have to wear tights, and the fact that the tights I want to wear have a huge hole in the toe doesn’t help. I put on some socks over them but of course they show with these shoes, and there’s no hiding them. I’m very ambivalent about the result, and let’s face it it’s probably a bit ridiculous and shortens my legs. Unless I unadvertently re-created a new fashion trend (read this), in which case I got it all wrong. On the other hand, the socks are not that noticeable and de-sexify the outfit -which CAN be good… especially if you’re a commited Man Repeller ;)

Conclusion: It’s just an outfit. Who cares, right?

Desperate

image

knit top: grandma’s creation, cardigan: new look from ages ago, jeans: massimo dutti, shoes: aniel.

I saw a bit of sun outside and I convinced myself that spring was finally here -and dressed accordingly, You can clearly see my desperation in this outfit. By now, all I can think of is when I’ll be able to wear my clothes without sticking my coat, gloves, scarf and hat over them, and I dream of the day I will go bare-legged again.

For the moment though, exposing my ankles was slightly painful, and I think the colours were just too bright for winter… Plus I’m unsure about the cardigan. I bought it back when all the high street clothes were synthetic fabric (the plasticky kind) and wore it all the time, but it’s been ages since I last wore it. I brought it to Amsterdam though, thinking it might be useful -and it really is versatile, but I don’t know, it seems a bit tacky to me… i think I’ll have to let it go.

image

image

I do love my bright pink cotton, made by my grandma ages ago and discovered in one of my mother’s cupboards last summer. I think the outfit minus the jacket will be perfect for Amsterdam summer. I went with red lipstick which contrasts nicely with the pink top.

I restyled this outfit later and liked the result better (although I wouldn’t wear it with the pumps to go to class. But maybe with my dark blue flats…)

sweater: weekday, pumps: zara

Apologies for the bad quality photos, but… yeah. (I’m still too shy to ask a friend with a camera)

New in

image

My love affair with the zara pumps continued, and I finally went for the nude version. I’m still thinking that maybe I should have gotten the black ones, which are also winter-appropriate, but these babies have a lot of potential and, frankly, I was getting sick of winter and black shoes. These have spring written all over them and now I can only hope that the weather will follow suit.

So now I’m slowly training myself to wear them -I finally understand why platform shoes were in for so long!- and looking for the perfect occasion to wear them. I’m thinking of wearing them in the not-most-ladylike manner (refer to previous post), but maybe I’ll just dress up and go to church in them. Pearl necklace, anyone? Or think Carrie Bradshaw in SATC season 1, episode 12.

For the moment, though, I wore them with my PJ’s and took an obscene amount of pictures :)
