The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism.
It contains some of the most crucial texts ever written by the most important, celebrated and controversial thinkers (in the Western world at least). And given how carefully selected the texts are, how well-written the introductions and how thorough the footnotes, how meticulously and thoughtfully edited the anthology (down to the several contents tables), it is the best value for money you can get -provided you actually crack it open, of course.
